So you think you’re special…
Well, fact is, most people feel the exact same way. Have you ever thought “When I grow up I’m going to be rich and famous” or “I’m very mature for my age” or “I’m a good driver”. Or do you think you’re special for other reason? Sure you are, but compared to who or what? Depending on the scale you are measuring against, any statement can be true.
We are all unique, but doesn't that make us all "not special" if we are all the same? I frequently have the feeling "I'm destined for so much more" or "I'm way too smart to be doing what I'm doing for a living". However, I have a feeling that most, if not all of us feel the same. Are any of us right?
Based on that, what makes those people different that actually say "I'm destined for so much more" and then go out and prove themselves right? The answer is in the question, they actually go out and do it. Whatever it is, they do it. They don't sit around dreaming all day long, hoping the right moment comes by and fulfills all their desires. They go find it, and then grab it with both hands and hold on tight.
In America, we are taught that when you grow up that you can be anything you want to be. Fact is, it is possible to try and achieve anything that you want, but success is not guarenteed. For example, there are probably 100,000 college kids right now that all are trying to make their dreams of becoming a professional football player come true. The sad truth is that most of them will never see those dreams recognized, even though they may have spent their entire lives preparing themselves for this moment in their life. There are also at least 100,000 "bands" across the country that are all trying to "make it big" and get signed and then make a living off their music.
The common variable with all of the people is that they are all trying to live their dreams. To make a living doing something they love to do. I have never, and will never discourage someone from trying to make their dreams come true. Not because I personally think they actually have a chance at doing so, but because hope is a very powerful tool. Whether any of these people actually accomplish their goal really isn’t the point, it’s that they all spent their lives trying to do so, and in doing so kept hope alive.
Having money doesn’t make you special. Having the best job in the world doesn’t make you special. Going to some exclusive school doesn’t make you special. Having the intestinal fortitude to make something better of yourself and of those around you, does make you special. The cliché “Actions speak louder than words” is deeply true. If you are overweight and would like to lose weight, and all you do is sit around and complain about how fat you are, do you honestly think that you’re going to lose weight complaining? No, of course you won’t. You’re only going to lose weight when you decide to do something about it.
So again I ask you, “So you think you’re special?”. You are only as special as the person you are comparing yourself to and whether or not you’re willing to try and achieve what you desire.
